N.D. farmers plant more corn

FARGO (AP) — Spring wheat and soybean acres are stable in North Dakota this year, while the size of the state’s corn crop has risen 12 percent.

FARGO (AP) — Spring wheat and soybean acres are stable in North Dakota this year, while the size of the state’s corn crop has risen 12 percent.

The Agriculture Department in its June acreage report says North Dakota farmers have planted about 6.4 million acres of spring wheat and 4.2 million acres of soybeans. The spring wheat crop is down 1 percent from 2010 and the soybean figure is up 2 percent to a record high. Corn acres stand at 2.3 million.

Acres of North Dakota durum wheat are down 44 percent over the year. Much of the crop is grown in an area of the state that has been hit hard by flooding.

Acres of barley and oats are at record lows in North Dakota. Sugar beet acres are up 11 percent.
