BISMARCK (AP) — Authorities have filed attempted murder charges against a North Dakota man who authorities say pulled a pistol in a courtroom after being convicted of felony sex crimes.
KXMB-TV reported that Vicente Chacano faces 14 counts. His attorney did not immediately return a telephone call to The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday.
The alleged incident happened Feb. 4 at the Adams County Courthouse in Hettinger. The gun didn’t fire and no one was hurt, though authorities say Chacano tried numerous times to get a shot off.
The North Dakota House and Senate later approved resolutions honoring Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Byers for his role in subduing Chacano.
Prosecutors filed the attempted murder charges in late May. Chacano’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
