Big pricetag for NCAA meeting

When North Dakota officials meet with the NCAA about the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname, the travel bill is likely to run more than $6,000.

BISMARCK (AP) — When North Dakota officials meet with the NCAA about the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname, the travel bill is likely to run more than $6,000.

Airline tickets for the six participants will run almost $5,300. Per diem and meal money could total more than $800.

The July 25 meeting in Indianapolis will allow the North Dakotans to defend a new state law that requires UND to remain the Fighting Sioux. The NCAA says it won’t drop its opposition to the nickname.

North Dakota House majority leader Al Carlson of Fargo sponsored the law and will attend the meeting. He said the money is a good investment for the law’s supporters, and he said it’s a minor expense when compared to North Dakota’s state budget.
