Farmers expect to harvest less wheat

The Agriculture Department said the expected average yield of 38 bushels per acre is down 6 bushels from 2010, and the area expected to be harvested is down 2 percent over the year to just under 6.2 million acres.
FARGO (AP) — North Dakota farmers are expected to produce just under 234 million bushels of spring wheat this year, down 16 percent from last year.
The Agriculture Department said the expected average yield of 38 bushels per acre is down 6 bushels from 2010, and the area expected to be harvested is down 2 percent over the year to just under 6.2 million acres.
Durum wheat production is pegged at about 29 million bushels, down 56 percent. Much of North Dakota’s durum crop is grown in areas that have been hit hard by flooding. Acres for harvest are forecast at 970,000, down 46 percent.
The state’s winter wheat crop is expected to be down 12 percent, the barley crop down 36 percent and the oat crop also down 36 percent.
