Cleanup continues at oil well in northwest ND

A state health official says an oil well accident in northwest North Dakota affected 60 acres of land, and half of it had major damage that will take “some time” to restore.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A state health official says an oil well accident in northwest North Dakota affected 60 acres of land, and half of it had major damage that will take “some time” to restore.

About 400 barrels of oil and salt water sprayed into the air last Thursday when a heavy equipment operator drove into a well near Alexander operated by Denbury Onshore.

Health Department environmental geologist Kris Roberts tells The Bismarck Tribune that about 50 barrels of oil sprayed onto vegetation. Plants that died were mowed and will be hauled off for disposal. Officials in coming weeks will evaluate vegetation that was stressed but not killed, then do a prescribed burn and put a substance on the land that breaks down oil residue.

The company is responsible for cleanup costs.
