Petitions submitted to cut Valley City positionA group seeking to eliminate the city administrator position in Valley City has submitted petitions to the city auditor.
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — A group seeking to eliminate the city administrator position in Valley City has submitted petitions to the city auditor.
Group spokesman Brian Mindt tells KOVC radio that city commissioners could do the work of the city administrator to save taxpayer money.
City Auditor Avis Richter says verification of the petition signatures should be completed next week. If there are enough valid signatures, the City Commission could eliminate the city administrator position with an ordinance or call for a public vote.
The group needs about 500 signatures and says it collected nearly 600.
About 6,500 people live in Valley City, which has had recent political turmoil including the suspension of the police chief and efforts to recall the mayor and some city commissioners.
