The opening night of the Lions All-Star Basketball games went to Class A.

The ‘A’ girls led from start to finish in their game, but the boys’ game went down to the wire with the ‘A’ holding on, 84-81.

Boys

The Class A boys held on to finish off the sweep.

Class B led 65-57 with 12 minutes to go in the second half, but a 13-4 run by Class A put them in front 71-69 with eight minutes left and it was back and forth from there.

Class A did go up 81-76 with 2:50 to play, but missed free throws gave the ‘B’ boys a chance late, but with the score 84-81 and less than five seconds to play, Mr. Basketball winner Philip Schanilec’s half-court heave to tie it was just off the mark as time expired.

Evan Holt of Fargo Oak Grove led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Schanilec added 17 points and Easton Page of Carrington finished with 13 as the Class B squad shot 52 percent (34-65).

Fargo North’s Nick Schultz led the Class A squad with 16 points. Jesse Crosby of Minot had 14 and Bismarck’s DeWayne Liggins 12.

Girls

The Class A girls had too much firepower in the first of the two meetings between the squads.

Class A hung 45 points on the board in both halves en route to a 90-71 victory.

Twelve girls scored for the Class team, including four in double figures and two more players had eight points.

Class A led 8-2 early and never trailed in the game as they shot a blistering 51 percent, making 36 of their 70 shots in the game.

Miss Basketball award winner Caitlin Farroh led the way. The Grand Forks Central standout headed to Northern State in Aberdeen scored 12 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the ‘A’ girls. Sophie Kenney of Fargo Shanley led the Class A girls in scoring with 15 points. Anna Hruby had 12 points to lead Bismarck and Alyssa Dehne of Fargo North had 10.

The Class B girls shot a respectable 42 percent, but it was not enough to keep up. They trailed 45-38 at halftime, but Class A scored the first seven points of the second half to take 14-point edge.

Former District 7 standouts Maggie Lorenz and Jessica Hale combined for 25 of Class B’s total.

Lorenz of Harvey scored 15 points, second-most on the ‘B’ team, while Hale of Four Winds hit for 10 points. They were topped by Standing Rock’s Shauna Long’s 16 points.

The second night of the All-Star Games is tonight at the Fargo Civic Center.
