Milk production down in N.D.

Milk production in North Dakota during April, May and June totaled 99 million pounds, down 11 percent from the second quarter in 2010. The federal Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows in North Dakota during the quarter stood at 19,000, down 1,000 from the previous quarter and down 2,000 over the year.

FARGO (AP) — Milk production in North Dakota during April, May and June totaled 99 million pounds, down 11 percent from the second quarter in 2010.

The federal Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows in North Dakota during the quarter stood at 19,000, down 1,000 from the previous quarter and down 2,000 over the year.

Milk produced per cow was 4,615 pounds, up from 4,400 pounds the previous quarter and but down from 4,700 pounds the previous year.

Nationwide, milk production during the second quarter totaled 50.4 billion pounds, up 1.3 percent over the year.
