Dalrymple wants new plan for Minot

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state and federal government will pay most of the cost for an engineering study to plan a new Minot flood control project.

BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state and federal government will pay most of the cost for an engineering study to plan a new Minot flood control project.

Dalrymple says the study will be used to decide how much flood-prone property to buy, and to figure out the design of a new levee network to protect Minot from future floods.

Minot’s present flood control system was designed to protect against river flows of 5,000 cubic feet per second. At the height of the flood, the river flows were five times that large.

The Souris River flood damaged about 4,100 homes and businesses in Minot.

Dalrymple is chairman of the state Water Commission, and he says he’ll discuss the engineering study at the commission’s next meeting in two weeks.
