Bismarck murder convict to be released soon

A former Bismarck police officer imprisoned for killing his girlfriend nearly a quarter century ago is being released from prison in a couple of years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A former Bismarck police officer imprisoned for killing his girlfriend nearly a quarter century ago is being released from prison in a couple of years.

KXMB-TV reports that Guy McGlaughlin is due to be released in August 2014 with time off for good behavior. The state Parole Board has decided to release him to a transition center nine months before that, so he can get help finding a place to live and work, and adjust to a society he hasn't been a part of since 1988. He'll be 65 years old.

McGlaughlin was with the Bismarck Police Department for 15 years before pleading guilty to murder and being sentenced to 40 years behind bars.
