ND law officers cracking down on impaired drivers

Law enforcement officers across North Dakota are cracking down on people who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Law enforcement officers across North Dakota are cracking down on people who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The period of stepped-up enforcement is Thursday through Sept. 5, which is Labor Day.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says 39 percent of all traffic deaths last year involved alcohol.

State Transportation Department Safety Division Director Mark Nelson says DUI enforcement works. He says that since eight regional DUI task forces began operating last October, there have been no DUI-related fatalities during scheduled crackdowns in North Dakota.
