BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials from North Dakota's two state research universities are reporting positive first-day enrollment numbers.

Enrollment at the University of North Dakota increased by 645 students from 13,431 last year to 14,076 this year. This is a 4.8 percent increase.

North Dakota State University enrollment numbers held steady, with 14,240 students enrolled in its undergraduate, professional and graduate programs compared to 14,204 on the first day of fall 2010.

NDSU President Dean L. Bresciani says in a release that some legislators have expressed concern about NDSU's growth, and the university tried to control new student enrollment while the topic is being examined. He says the slight increase in enrollment shows how in demand the university has become.

Official enrollments numbers are taken four weeks into the semester.
