Although not official, the first-day head count for Jamestown Public Schools shows that the district is growing.

Four out of the five elementary schools gained students, which is good because the district has been losing students over the past few years, said Bob Toso, JPS superintendent.

“Our kindergarten grew and we added another section so that’s where a large part of the growth comes from,” Toso said. “It bodes well for the future.”

Last year the official number of students was at 2,088. This year the unofficial count is 2,111, an increase of 23 students.

The official enrollment figures will be released Sept. 9.
