HANKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Two people were hospitalized after a shooting at an apartment complex near a southeast North Dakota casino. Authorities say the man who apparently pulled the trigger said it was an accident.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office said 29-year-old Anthony Hayes was taken to a Fargo hospital with a wound to his hand, and 28-year-old Kari Dumarce was taken to a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital with a wound to her abdomen. Neither injury was believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities say Hayes told them he was unloading a handgun Tuesday morning when it went off. They believe alcohol played a role. Local, state and federal authorities from the two states are investigating.
Hayes lives in the housing development near Dakota Magic Casino. Dumarce is from Sisseton, S.D.
