Student newspaper at the University of North Dakota in the red but optimistic

The University of North Dakota’s student newspaper is tapping into a reserve fund to make up an $18,000 deficit racked up over the past two years.

GRAND FORKS (AP) — The University of North Dakota’s student newspaper is tapping into a reserve fund to make up an $18,000 deficit racked up over the past two years.

The Grand Forks Herald reported that it’s the first time in at least 30 years that the Dakota Student has gone into the red. The paper relies on advertising for the bulk of its income and has been hurt by more groups and events switching to Internet ads.

The newspaper is making cost-cutting changes such as reducing pages and printing fewer copies, and looking to increase revenue through Internet advertising. Longtime business manager Sue Litzinger said the paper is still doing “really well” overall.
