Wardner: UND nickname bill should be repealed

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — The newly elected majority leader in the North Dakota Senate says the state law requiring the University of North Dakota to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname and American Indian head logo should be repealed.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — The newly elected majority leader in the North Dakota Senate says the state law requiring the University of North Dakota to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname and American Indian head logo should be repealed.

Dickinson Republican Rich Wardner voted in favor of the nickname bill earlier this year. He now tells the Grand Forks Herald (http://bit.ly/mP8QpM ) that it should be repealed during a special legislative session in November.

That is likely to happen because the NCAA is refusing to back down on promised sanctions against UND if the nickname and logo are kept. The NCAA considers them offensive.

Wardner was elected Senate majority leader on Tuesday. He replaces Bismarck Sen. Bob Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm), who was killed in a crash in Alaska in July.
