BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for downloading more than 16,000 images that show children being sexually abused.

Richard Mullen, of Dickinson, pleaded guilty in federal court to receipt of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors.

The case was investigated through Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland ordered the 57-year-old Mullen to serve 10 years of supervised release following his prison term.
