CDC reports drop in ND adult smokers

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fewer adults are smoking in North Dakota.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that the tobacco use study found that the state's adult smoking rate decreased from 18.6 percent in 2009 to 17.4 percent in 2010.
The organization also reported a drop in adult smokers nationwide.
North Dakota Department of Health tobacco program director Michelle Walker says a higher tobacco tax, media campaigns and smoke free policies across the state are largely responsible for the drop.
She says the 62-cent federal tax increase on cigarettes and tobacco products in 2009 spurred many smokers to seek cessation services.
And she notes that seven North Dakota communities, including Bismarck, have implemented laws to ban smoking in bars since 2009.
