ND GOP redistricting draws Dem complaints
A North Dakota Republican plan for new legislative districts could force the state Senate's Democratic leader to run against another Democrat to keep his seat.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota Republican plan for new legislative districts could force the state Senate's Democratic leader to run against another Democrat to keep his seat.
Towner Sen. Ryan Taylor was elected last year as the Senate's minority leader. He's exploring a run for the Democratic endorsement for governor.
The Republican redistricting plan would put Taylor in the same district as Lansford Sen. David O'Connell. O'Connell was the Democratic leader before Taylor replaced him.
Taylor says the proposal looks suspicious.
Grand Forks Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg is chairman of the legislative committee that drew the proposal. He says the proposed district makes sense. It includes Bottineau, Renville and McHenry counties.
Holmberg says the map also puts the jobs of several Republican legislators at risk.
O'Connell says the plan doesn't bother him.
