Suicide prevention topic of Tuesday meeting

“Suicide Awareness/ Prevention” is the topic of the next meeting of the Parent Awareness/ Prevention Center. The meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Thompson Community Room at Jamestown Middle School.

Presenting the program is Mary Weiler, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – ND Chapter.

Weiler and her family brought the first AFSP Out of Darkness Community Walk to the Fargo-Moorhead community in October 2006 after her daughter died by suicide in October 2005. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading national not-for-profit exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide.

In May 2007, Weiler completed the requirements for the establishment of the AFSP – ND Chapter. In January 2008, she completed the AFSP survivor of suicide loss facilitative training and continues to facilitate the monthly support group in her community. The AFSP-ND Chapter was awarded four AFSP National Awards: Most Improved Chapter in 2007, the Chapter of the Year in 2008 and 2010 and the Overall Chapter of the Year Award in 2009. Weiler currently chairs the board for the ND Chapter, is a member of the North Dakota Suicide Prevention Coalition and a member of the AFSP Chapter Leadership Council and Public subcommittee for AFSP – Suicide Prevention Advocacy Network.
