United Tribal Technical Colelge gets federal grant

Sens. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D., announced today that United Tribal Technical College in Bismarck will receive a $567,433 federal grant from the Economic Development Administration.

“This grant is an investment in North Dakota's future workforce. The funding will help create and sustain jobs and allow UTTC to continue to promote education and long term economic growth,” the delegation said in a joint statement.

The EDA grant supports the creation of a Tribal Environmental Risk Mitigation training program at UTTC. Graduates of the program will be able to assist Native American reservations across Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota with environmental issues.

Specifically, the UTTC program will train environmental technicians who can assist tribal entities in managing water resources and protecting water rights; managing land resources including mineral deposits and wildlife; and, mitigating environmental risk and distress in tribal areas of the upper Missouri River basin.

The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration with funds appropriated by Congress.
