Prescribed burns planned in western ND grasslands

The U.S. Forest Service plans prescribed burns on the Little Missouri National Grassland in western North Dakota over the next several weeks, if weather allows.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service plans prescribed burns on the Little Missouri National Grassland in western North Dakota over the next several weeks, if weather allows.

About 300 acres will be burned in the McKenzie Ranger District. No road closures are planned. Officials say people in the area will notice smoke for several days.

The Forest Service uses fire as a management tool. Officials say among other things, it reduces the threat of wildfires and improves wildlife habitat.
