BISMARCK (AP) — A new bishop is to be named Wednesday for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bismarck.
Bishop Paul Zipfel is retiring after reaching the mandatory age of 75 in September 2010. He has served since being appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1997. His successor named by Pope Benedict XVI will be the seventh bishop of the Bismarck diocese.
Diocese Chancellor Joel Melarvie told The Bismarck Tribune that Zipfel plans to teach at the University of Mary. The Bismarck school last year named its Catholic Studies program after Zipfel.
