ND doctor appointed to federal advisory committee

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has appointed a Bismarck doctor to one of her advisory committees.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has appointed a Bismarck doctor to one of her advisory committees.

Medcenter One pediatrician Stephen McDonough is serving a four-year term on the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children. The committee advises HHS on which genetic and metabolic conditions should be screened at birth and what can be done to improve the health of children with the conditions.

McDonough has served 15 years as medical director of newborn metabolic screening at the state Health Department.

Last year, McDonough was appointed to President Barack Obama's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.
