ND officer shooting suspect remains hospitalized

Burleigh County is paying thousands of dollars a day in medical costs for a man accused of killing a Bismarck police officer.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Burleigh County is paying thousands of dollars a day in medical costs for a man accused of killing a Bismarck police officer.

Fifty-two-year-old Steven Bannister pleaded not guilty in the July 8 slaying of Sgt. Steve Kenner. Kenner was killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call. He was the first Bismarck Police officer killed while on duty.

Another officer shot Bannister after he shot Kenner, but Bannister recovered from the injuries before having a stroke last month.

Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert tells the Bismarck Tribune that the county is charged about $2,000 per day so Bannister can undergo therapy in an effort to return to jail.

Heinert says the sheriff's department is already tight on money due to overtime associated with summer flooding.
