Mule deer production in ND lowest on record
North Dakota wildlife officials say an aerial survey indicates that mule deer production this year is the lowest on record.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota wildlife officials say an aerial survey indicates that mule deer production this year is the lowest on record.
Big game supervisor Bruce Stillings says observers last month counted 1,055 mule deer in a 306-square-mile area in western North Dakota. He says the buck-to-doe ratio of 0.47 was close to the long-term average, but the fawn-to-doe ratio of 0.59 was the lowest in the history of the survey that dates back to 1954. The long-term average fawn-to-doe ratio is 0.93.
Stillings says three straight years of record-low production and another severe winter in the forecast makes additional hunting license cuts likely next year.
