N.D. hunters down this year

North Dakota’s deer gun hunting season opened at noon Friday, with fewer hunters taking to the field.

BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota’s deer gun hunting season opened at noon Friday, with fewer hunters taking to the field.

State wildlife officials this year made available about 6 percent fewer licenses overall because of a decline in the deer population following a string of tough winters and the loss of some habitat. The 110,000 licenses are the lowest in a decade.

Game and Fish Department Wildlife Chief Randy Kreil said the situation isn’t gloom and doom, but it is different from the banner years to which hunters have become accustomed. Deer licenses peaked at about 150,000 just three years ago.

The season runs through Nov. 20.
