Hart, Lind remain perfect: Blue Jay standouts keep undefeated streak alive at West Region

Jamestown’s Erin Hart and Alex Lind followed up a flawless regular season with another flawless day at the West Region meet on Saturday in Mandan.

Jamestown’s Erin Hart and Alex Lind followed up a flawless regular season with another flawless day at the West Region meet on Saturday in Mandan.

Hart won both the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and Lind took the diving competition, giving both standouts a perfect record heading into Friday’s state meet in Grand Forks.

“That was great,” said Jamestown coach Ben Smith. “They went the whole year undefeated in their respective events, so that’s good.”

Hart edged out Williston’s Ketti Ringwall in the 200 free by just over a second and then beat Century’s Dani Bergeson by over two seconds as she easily earned a spot on the all-West Region team.

Lind, who was also named to the all-West Region team, didn’t surpass her most recent recordsetting performance, but she didn’t need to as she cleared the field by over 20 points.

Century’s Lauren Gietzen and Williston’s Shantha Trottier finished in second and third, respectively, and Jamestown’s Abby Wanzek finished 4th.

“Abby had her best meet of the season so far,” said Smith. “That was great for her.”

The Blue Jays had four divers finish in the top 15, with senior Mercedes Westereng placing 8th and Abbie Conlon following in 14th.

Wanzek, a junior, and freshman Annie Hart were also named all-West Region — which was awarded to the top 20 swimmers and the top 4 divers of the meet — and Smith was named the West Region’s Coach of the Year.

Annie Hart registered a couple of solid performances in the pool as she placed 4th in the 100 backstroke and 5th in the 100 freestyle.

But it wasn’t just the individual events that stuck out to Smith.

Annie Hart, Kamie Wagar, Erin Hart and Paige Peterson teamed up to finish 3rd in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, while the 400 free relay team of Camille Kawasaki, Chesney Middaugh, Brianna Johnson and Karlie Marler placed sixth.

“All three of our relays had season-best times,” Smith said. “That sets them up really well for placing at state.”

Wagar, a junior, also notched a top-5 individual performance by finishing 4th in the 100 butterfly.

The Patriots took home the team title with 442 and the Coyotes finished in a close second with 434. Jamestown finished fifth with 263.

The season enters its final chapter this weekend with 16 Blue Jays fighting for a state title in Grand Forks.

“That’s our biggest state team we’ve had in a while, so that’s great to see,” said Smith.
