Reyes qualifies for nationals

Jamestown College’s Aleona Reyes has been leading the Jimmie women’s cross country team all season, and Saturday, at the A.I.I. Conference Qualifier in San Marcos, Calif., was no different.

The sophomore runner not only helped lead Jamestown College to a third-place team finish at what was one of the tougher meets the Jimmies had competed in this season, but she qualified individually for the NAIA national meet, which begins in two weeks in Vancouver, Wash.

Reyes used a personal-best time of 17:51 to extend her season to the NAIA’s most elite meet.

“That was an impressive showing for her,” said Jimmie women’s coach Jim Clark. “It was a good, fast course with a lot of good competition.”

Reyes qualified for the national tournament last year, but collapsed in the first 1,000 meters because of some health problems.

This time, however, she is looking to complete the entire course.

“She promised me she was going to finish the race this year,” Clark joked. “She’s certainly excited.”

But it wasn’t only Reyes who contributed to the Jimmies’ impressive score of 84.

Madeline Hornung just missed out on joining Reyes at nationals by placing 21st with a time of 19:36.

“If she would have beaten one more runner she would have qualified,” said Clark. “She ran well, but not quite as well as she did in Yankton (S.D.).”

Mallory Souder nipped fellow Jimmie Andrea Markwart by one second to capture 25th and Cambrya Belter rounded out Jamestown College’s scorers by placing 28th.

“We were ranked third in that conference all year, so I was thinking we could finish there,” Clark said. “Those first two teams are just so good.”

Cal State San Marcos took the team title with a score of 22 and the University of British Columbia finished second (43).

Reyes will have some time off before heading to Vancouver for the national meet on Nov. 19.

The Jimmie men finished seventh as a team behind a 24th-place finish by JJ Koerber.

The senior covered the course in a time of 26:44, missing out on nationals by 17 seconds.

“That was a lifetime best for him,” said JC men’s coach Ed Crawford. “He ran a pretty good race.”

Justin Slusser placed 37th for the Jimmies with a time of 27:59 and Nathan Christensen finished 44th.

“Justin ran phenomenal,” Crawford said. “He did a fantastic job and ran a good race for us.”

Sophomore Clinton Senn placed 47th, but was battling an IT (iliotibial) band injury throughout most the race.

“He didn’t run a personal best, but he still ran his second or third best time,” Crawford said

David Londe finished right behind Senn in 48th and Spencer Komoni placed 52nd.

“It was a good end to the season,” said Crawford. “Definitely a lot of improvement from the last couple of years.”
