ND farm family in custody, ending strange standoff

Five members of a Nelson County farm family involved in a months-long standoff with authorities are in custody.

LAKOTA, N.D. (AP) — Five members of a Nelson County farm family involved in a months-long standoff with authorities are in custody.

Authorities in northeast North Dakota arrested father Rodney Brossart and son Jacob without incident Sunday as the two finished harvesting a field, and Rodney Brossart's other adult children Abby, Alex and Thomas Brossart surrendered at the farm after several hours of negotiations. The five had arrest warrants for not appearing in court.

In June, the family was involved in a 16-hour armed standoff over the ownership of six cows that had wandered onto the Brossart property near Lakota. Authorities say the family members have ignored orders to appear in court on felony charges including terrorizing and resisting arrest. Authorities say they have been wary of the situation escalating into violence.
