BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers spent a few moments Wednesday remembering former Republican Senate majority leader Bob Stenehjem.
The 59-year-old Stenehjem was killed last August in a traffic accident in Alaska. He was there on a family fishing trip.
Stenehjem was the Republican Senate majority leader for 10 years.
Both the North Dakota House and Senate approved a resolution Wednesday in Stenehjem’s honor.
Dickinson Sen. Rich Wardner was elected to take Stenehjem’s place. Wardner says he’s honored to have the job, and “some days, I think he’s going to walk through the door and kick me out.”
House Majority Leader Al Carlson of Fargo said Stenehjem was “my partner.” Carlson said Stenehjem was good at building coalitions to pass legislation.
