Skaters off to good start

The James River Figure Skating Club had a successful debut to its first competition of the season.

Libbie Allen, Sami Buhl, Chelsea Huber, Morgan Huber, Kaitlin Mullowney, Emily Suckow, Annika Tweten and Gabby Tweten competed in the 20th Annual Granite City Classic Figure Skating Competition in St. Cloud, Minn., Nov. 11-12.

Jamesriver skaters, led by coach Mark Vasarhelyi, collected eight first-place finishes, 12 runner-up performances, one third-place skate and seven fourth-place ribbons.

All eight of the Jamesriver skaters either won an event or earned runner-up trophies.

The competition featured Compulsory, Free Skate, Artistic, Jumps, Sprints, Interpretive and Solo Dance events. Jamesriver skaters won trophies in 28 of the 33 events entered.

The competition featured 47 clubs from five states — Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Emily Suckow (Open Pre-Juvenile): Compulsory, 1st; Free Skate, 5th; Artistic, 2nd; Interpretive, 1st.

Chelsea Huber (Pre-Preliminary): Compulsory, 2nd; Free Skate, 5th; Artistic, 7th; Solo Dance-Rhythm Blues, 2nd.

Kaitlin Mullowney (Pre-Preliminary): Compulsory, 4th; Free Skate, 2nd; Artistic, 1st.

Annika Tweten (Pre-Preliminary): Compulsory, 1st; Free Skate, 2nd; Artistic, 4th; Spins, 4th; Jumps, 4th.

Gabby Tweten (No Test): Compulsory, 4th; Free Skate, 1st; Artistic, 2nd.
