Finley voters deciding on sales tax increase

Residents of the eastern North Dakota town of Finley are voting on whether to double the community's 1 percent sales tax.

FINLEY, N.D. (AP) — Residents of the eastern North Dakota town of Finley are voting on whether to double the community's 1 percent sales tax.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that if the measure is approved Tuesday, the money will pay for repairs to public facilities. Street lights need new underground wiring, and the town's water tower needs maintenance.

If the new tax is approved, it will end when the two projects are completed.

The 1 percent sales tax in the town of about 450 people generates about $65,000 annually. The city gets 40 percent, the Finley Economic Development Corp. 50 percent and the local park board 10 percent.
