Police warn of texting scam

The Jamestown Police Department is warning residents of a possible scam involving text messages from an alleged credit union.

Sgt. John Johnson advised residents not to respond to the text message, which claims the victim’s credit card has been declined and asks the victim to call a North Dakota phone number. At least 12 Jamestown area residents had reported the text message as of Saturday morning.

Once the victim calls the number, he or she is asked to give out credit card numbers and other personal information. Don’t do it, Johnson said.

“This has nothing to do with our local credit union,” he said.

If residents have already called the number and given their personal information, they should call their card holders to cancel the credit cards, Johnson said.

Johnson said the police department has previously received reports of scams via email, letters and phone calls, but not involving text messages.

Johnson said police will turn information over to the North Dakota Office of the Attorney General on Monday.
