BISMARCK (AP) — About a half a dozen minimum security inmates at the Missouri River Correctional Center have been working to fix up donated toys and bikes for children who otherwise wouldn’t have Christmas gifts.

The Bismarck Tribune reported that the toys will be taken to the Salvation Army and distributed on Saturday.

The men work as part of the Christmas Playpen project, an initiative that involves the correctional center, the newspaper, the Salvation Army and other businesses.

Four men work to repair the donated bikes, two men clean and sort toys and another paints the bikes. They completed about 50 bikes and about 12 boxes of toys as of Friday morning.

The men said they like to fix up the toys and bikes.
