Fargo project would turn flood prevention into art

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The chairman of a federal agency that funds the arts was in North Dakota on Thursday to see how the state's largest city plans to turn flood prevention into civic beauty.
It's known as “The Fargo Project.” It will serve as the pilot for the renewal of several large drainage basins in a city that has coped with major river flooding in recent years.
The city has tapped ecological artist Jackie Brookner to lead the project, which will take one of the storm water detention ponds and turn it into a neighborhood commons.
National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman says the project is an unusual one for his group to finance, but he calls it “the intersection of arts and communities.”
