Sioux petitions almost ready
Secretary of State Al Jaeger said two petitions to support the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname are almost ready for signatures.
BISMARCK (AP) — Secretary of State Al Jaeger said two petitions to support the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname are almost ready for signatures.
Jaeger had planned to approve the petitions for circulation late Monday. But he said later they were being delayed until Tuesday to allow some minor problems to be fixed.
UND has been taking steps to retire the nickname since the North Dakota Legislature voted last month to let the school drop it.
Jaeger plans to approve two separate petitions on Tuesday.
One asks for a constitutional amendment to require UND to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname.
The second petition would reverse the Legislature’s decision to let UND drop the nickname.
Petition backers will be trying to gather enough signatures to put both of them on the ballot.
