ND experiencing big demand for law officers

The demand for law enforcement officers in North Dakota is booming, in large part because of the oil boom in the western part of the state.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — The demand for law enforcement officers in North Dakota is booming, in large part because of the oil boom in the western part of the state.

Lake Region State College Peace Officer Training Program director Lloyd Halvorson says the program a decade ago trained about 100 officers annually, and it now trains nearly double that number.

Halvorson tells the Grand Forks Herald that retirements and increased activity in population centers have contributed to the need. He also says the growth in demand for officers in the oil patch is unprecedented. He says some law agencies in western North Dakota have doubled or tripled in size in the last three years.
