Letter to the editor: Police chief should be chosen by public election

I write about the choosing of a new chief of police for Jamestown.

The City Council is meeting this week to interview candidates for the job. Later it will pick one.

I say this is a spoiled system. There are 16 people who want to run for the job. Why don’t we elect our police chief the same way we choose Stutsman County’s sheriff?

The highway patrol and police leaders should face election the same as other public officials. Otherwise, it is unfair to the sheriff to have to face election when others are appointed to policing jobs.

We the people should have the say-so, not the City Council.

The meetings to interview the candidates were set for Monday and Thursday. Instead we should have an election between the 16 candidates so the people can decide who they want for Jamestown’s police chief.
