N.D. rules order disclosure of ‘frack’ fluids

Proposed new North Dakota rules say oil companies have to disclose the recipe for special fluids they pump underground.

BISMARCK (AP) — Proposed new North Dakota rules say oil companies have to disclose the recipe for special fluids they pump underground.

The procedure is called “fracking,” which is short for hydraulic fracturing. Water, chemicals and grit are pumped underground at high pressure to break up shale rock and help the oil flow.

Critics say some companies are secretive about the makeup of fracking fluid. State Department of Mineral Resources director Lynn Helms said the proposed rules require companies to detail the information on a public website.
