BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The fatal shooting of Bismarck Police Sgt. Steven Kenner was one of 173 cases nationwide in which an officer died in the line of duty in 2011 — making the year one of the deadliest in history for U.S. law enforcement.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the death tally in 2011 is up 13 percent from 153 in 2010. Group Chairman Craig Floyd blames the rise on budget cuts to public safety departments.
The nonprofit group also reports that 2011 marks the first time in 14 years that firearms fatalities were higher than traffic-related deaths.
Kenner was killed in July as he responded to a domestic disturbance call about a man threatening a woman with a knife. It was the first line-of-duty fatality in Bismarck's history.
