The Jamestown Police Department will not have a chief or interim chief for at least a few days, according to Jeff Fuchs, city administrator.

Dave Donegan is retiring from the post after 17 years as chief and 37 years with the department. He announced his retirement in October with an effective date of Dec. 31.

The Jamestown City Council interviewed five candidates for the position on Dec. 19 and 22. The City Council could act on hiring the new chief during its regular meeting Jan. 3, Fuchs said.

Applicants for the position from the Jamestown Police Department were Sgt. Scott Edinger, Sgt. Tom Nagel, Lt. Robert Opp and Capt. Gary Peterson. Lt. Joel Sharf of the Moorhead (Minn.) Police Department was also interviewed.

“In the interim the lieutenants will operate their shifts as they normally do,” Fuchs said. “Also there is a captain in the detective division if something comes up the lieutenants don’t think they can handle.”

Peterson is the highest-ranking officer in the department.
