North Dakota regulators now have to review small wind power projects, and they’re looking for ways to streamline the process. This year, the Legislature told the state Public Service Commission to review site locations for wind projects that generate more than one-half of a megawatt of electricity. Before, regulators had to handle anything above 60 megawatts.

This year, the Legislature told the state Public Service Commission to review site locations for wind projects that generate more than one-half of a megawatt of electricity. Before, regulators had to handle anything above 60 megawatts.
The change means Lake Region State College in Devils Lake needed commission approval to build a single wind tower.
Lake Region has a wind energy technician program, and the tower is going to supply electricity to campus.
Public Service Commission President Tony Clark says the agency will develop procedures for handling smaller projects, so they don’t have to do the paperwork that larger wind farms require.
