Number of rabid animals increases

The Department of Health says there has been an increase in the number of animals testing positive for rabies in one North Dakota county.

BISMARCK (AP) — The Department of Health says there has been an increase in the number of animals testing positive for rabies in one North Dakota county.

The department is alerting residents of Bowman County after three animals — two skunks and one dog — tested positive for the viral disease since November.

Health Department epidemiologist Michelle Feist said having three positive rabies cases from one area in a short period of time is unusual.

She said that prior to the three cases, only one animal from Bowman County has tested positive for rabies in the past five years.
