Lake Sakakawea sets record for latest freeze-up

An unseasonably warm early winter has led to a record for the latest freeze-up on Lake Sakakawea, and a second record also is in danger.

RIVERDALE, N.D. (AP) — An unseasonably warm early winter has led to a record for the latest freeze-up on Lake Sakakawea, and a second record also is in danger.

The latest date the reservoir on the Missouri River in North Dakota had frozen was Jan. 16, in 2000. That record was surpassed Tuesday because the lake still has not officially been declared frozen over.

Army Corps of Engineers lake resource manager Linda Phelps tells The Bismarck Tribune that it will take up to a week of cold weather and relatively calm winds before ice locks up all of the lake.

Another lake record is in peril — the shortest duration of ice. That was set during the winter of 2002-03, when the ice lasted only 73 days.
