Good night’s work for gymnasts
Two Blue Jays posted 36 or better all around scores and another cleared 34 as part of another solid night for the gymnastics team. Alex Lind’s 36.2 included a sparkling 9.7 on floor as the Blue Jays hung a 141.650 on the board at the Blue-White Invite, a dual in Valley City between JHS and the Hi-Liners.
“The kids once again repeated the last couple of meets and are doing really well,” said JHS coach Dave Tews. “It’s a fun meet because we enter as many kids as we want and see how they all do.
“Overall, we did a lot of good things out there. Certainly a lot of positives.”
The Blue Jays had the top four all-around scores led by Lind (36.2) and Mercedes Westereng (36.0).
“I can’t remember the last time we had two kids with 36 in the same meet,” Tews said. “That was pretty impressive.”
Lind won the floor (9.7), vault (9.3) and bars (9.1). Westereng’s 9.1 on beam was the best score of the meet.
Ashley Kronebusch finished third overall with a 34.55 and she was second on both the beam and floor.
“That has to be pretty darn close to her best. Either way, she did really well,” Tews said of Kronebusch.
As a team, they scored over 36 on floor (36.9) and vault (36.3), and struggled some on vault and particularly beam, but the 141.650 was still quite high.
Jenna Stilwell’s 9.0 was good for third on vault and Kaiann Arellano (8.9) was fourth.
Erin Hillerud’s 34.1 was the fourth-highest all around mark.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Friday, but the pickings will be much slimmer. Only six girls can be entered in each event and every team in the state except Dickinson and Valley City will compete at the Julie Ziegler Invite in Bismarck.
