Grandparents are James and Della Lee, Jamestown, Patti Mattern, Bismarck, and Dan and Becky Mattern.

Great-grandparents are the Verna Lee, Jamestown, and the late Bernard Lee, Oscar and Shirley Baumgarter, Bismarck, and the late Clarence and Serena Schultes.

Joel has one sister, Hope Mattern, 21 months.
