BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's cattle inventory heading into 2012 was down from the previous year.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service says the state had 1.69 million head of cattle and calves on hand on Jan. 1, down 1 percent from 2010.
This is the fifth consecutive year there has been a decrease in herd size. On Jan. 1, 2007, the total inventory was 1.85 million head.
North Dakota's 2011 calf crop totaled 860,000 head, which was down 20,000 from 2010.
Cows and heifers that have calved totaled 880,000 head, a decrease from 900,000 cows a year ago.
