Jays hit new season high

The big scorers scored big for the Blue Jays as the gymnasts climbed to another season-high.

Mercedes Westereng surpassed the 37-point mark and Alex Lind was close as JHS rolled up a season-best team score of 143.150 easily outpointing Grand Forks Saturday afternoon here.

“When your main scorers score big that makes a difference,” coach Dave Tews said. “Obviously Mercedes and Alex had very good days, but our other girls did a pretty nice job too. It was a good day for us.”

Westereng and Lind gobbled up all the first-place finishes. Westereng the all around (37.1) and beam (9.45). Lind took bars (9.35) and vault (9.3). The two shared the top mark on floor (9.35).

They got plenty of help though too.

Eighth-grader Erin Hillerud was third overall (33.75). Ashley Kronebusch (33.3) and Carly Nelson (33.15) were closely behind as they had the top five all around marks.

Hillerud was third on floor, while Kronebusch’s 8.9 was third on vault.

Abbie Conlon was third on beam (8.55) and also scored on bars.

“We normally count on her on bars, but she helped out on beam. That was important,” Tews said.

Alison Allmer delivered an 8.8 on vault, which was the fourth-best score.

“She’s been working hard on vault after some struggles, but she finally got it to go for her today,” Tews said.

They did not have a bad event. Their 34.850 on bars was the only score under 35, and they cleared 36 comfortably on vault (36.15) and floor (37.0).

“If we could mail that 143 in we’d take it at WDA, and heck, state, and that would be great” Tews said. “But we can’t so we have to keep working hard to keep it there.”

The Jays are down to two invites before hosting the West Region meet Feb. 17. They compete in the Fargo Invite Friday.
