After finishing second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle on Friday, Willy Marler found his place back atop the podium on Saturday.

The Blue Jay senior picked up wins in both events to help lead Jamestown to a third-place team finish at the Blue Jay Invitational on Saturday at the JHS Pool.

“The boys did awesome,” said JHS coach Ben Smith. “There were some powerhouses there with West Fargo, Bismarck Century, Mandan and Fargo Davies.”

Marler also teamed up with Andy Oslund, Braydon Love and Colt Rasmussen to place second in the 200 freestyle.

The same team also placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.49.

“Our freestyle relays are doing very well,” Smith said. “Things are really coming together. That’s one of the things we’ve been focusing on in practice.”

Oslund had a good day individually in the pool with a fourth-place finish in the 50 free and a sixth in the 100 free. Rasmussen finished fourth in the 500 free and Hunter Boehm placed fifth in the 50 free.

Love finished 10th in the 500 free with a time of 5:36.63 to qualify for state, upping Jamestown’s total to 13 boys qualified in 31 events.

“I was looking at last year’s results at the Blue Jay Invite and it was fun to see all the improvement,” Smith said. “Not just individually, but also as a team.”

West Fargo went on to win the team title after the Packers placed two individuals and two relay teams atop the podium. The Packers finished with a team score of 580 and Bismarck Century followed in second with 446. Jamestown finished with 307.5.

The Blue Jays are on the road for the remainder of the regular season, starting on Friday with a two-day invitational in Bismarck.

“It will be a really big meet,” Smith said. “There are going to be teams from all over. Teams from Wyoming and Minnesota are going to be there.”
